How it Works
Self-Determination
Self-Determination. It's a big idea that can make a big difference in the lives of children. With it, children may find meaning and independence. Without it, they may struggle. Self-determination is defined as a person's ability to make their own choices and manage their own life.
Captain Me is an interactive, self-determination program for children with diverse needs, using puppets and music to help them learn to make good decisions for themselves and find their joy! Captain Me gives children a fun way to remember that they are in charge of their own lives.
Teachers, Practitioners, and Parents
Most educators and parents struggle to find time during a busy day to focus on self-determination. They are dealing with requirements from school districts, goals provided by school teams, and the usual challenges of a hectic life. Captain Me was designed to make it easier for teachers, practitioners, and parents to spend 10-15 minutes each week sharing a lively discussion with children about self-determination.
Lessons
The program consists of 12 episodes with corresponding evidence-informed lesson plans. Each lesson provides kids with a simple way to self-teach and reinforce important concepts that lead to independence and self-awareness. Topics include Goal Setting, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Planning, Progress Monitoring, Getting Organized, Handling Mistakes, Self Worth, Getting Calm, Self Motivation, and Being Kind.
In each lesson, Cappy—a fun-loving puppet—struggles with a problem. He comes to Miss Amy for help. There are two spots where the adult is cued to stop the video to ask specific questions. The questions allow children to hone their independent thinking and problem-solving skills.
At the end of every lesson, Cappy becomes "Captain Me," a superhero who demonstrates the skills needed to triumph over each problem he faces. Every video features a song that children can sing along with Cappy to help them remember the key parts of the lesson. The tunes are catchy and serve as a reminder for children to stay positive and engaged in their own learning. As Cappy says—you got this!
